COMMUNICATION DYSFUNCTION AND ITS EFFECTS OF GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTANT TEAM MEMBERS

Geographically distant team members are especially susceptible to the negative effects of communication dysfunction yet few managers or team members can identify or address these negative effects. Communication dysfunction, if left unresolved, can destroy relationships and negatively affect individual and team performance through increased conflict. This paper will provide an understanding of communication dysfunction by first discussing the rudiments of communication to include the effects of communication technology on psychologically distant communication, communication quality, communication structure and purpose, and pitfalls of miscommunication. Definitions of various types of communication dysfunction and how they affect geographically distant team member communication and performance will also be included. The unit of analysis in the discussion is the team comprised of both collocated and geographically distant team members. Particular attention is given to dyadic communication between team members, as well as between the manager and subordinate. This paper is aimed towards individuals having frequent communication with geographically distant or virtual team members.
