The residual hull girder strength of a bulk carrier in intact and damage condition under longitudinal bending moment is analysed using FEM. The average stress-average strain relationships for stiffened and unstiffened panels are used in the Smith’s method; those are derived by Yao et al and that given in IACS/CSR. The FEM analysis is performed using explicit dynamic. The single hull of a bulk carrier is taken in this study to investigate the residual hull girder strength with and without bottom damage. As the fundamental case, the bottom damage is simply created of rectangular area by removing some elements in the middle of the bottom part. From the results of analysis, the influence of the bottom damage on the residual hull girder strength is discussed including the effect of the deformation of double bottom in the damaged hold. The predicted residual hull girder strengths are compared and the applicability of the Smith’s method to the hull girder with bottom damage is examined.
