The degree of ablation of the contact of the circuit breaker is one of the important representations of the life of the circuit breaker. The existing method cannot detect and evaluate on line. The experiments in the laboratory show that the electromagnetic waves radiated during the breaking process of the circuit breaker are related to the ablation degree of the contact. In order to further clarify this association and lay the foundation for the assessment of the ablation degree of the circuit breaker contacts based on the radiation electromagnetic wave detection during the breaking process, breaking tests were carried out on a new circuit breaker until the end of the circuit breaker life which it cannot break short-circuit current, its radiation electromagnetic wave signals were measured. The results show that the number and amplitude of the radiated electromagnetic wave signal are changed with the increase of the number of interrupts. Based this change, it is possible to evaluate the ablation degree of the breaker contact based on the radiation electromagnetic wave detection.
