Power system electromechanical oscillation is a significant challenge in present power scenario. The snappy acting, of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) which is an effective reactive power control gadget, sufficiently competent to enhance the dynamic stability in the framework. To remove the oscillations generated due to disturbance in the power system, PI controller is used. Here, a modified and optimized sliding mode controller is designed to remove the oscillations during various operating conditions of an infinite bus power system (single-machine). Mixed ant colony optimization technique is used to optimize the gains of sliding mode controller. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with PI controller.
