CONNECT. Realizing benefit through sharing data.

In 2016, Atkins seed funded a proof of concept initiative with a UK water company, to determine how investment plans can be impacted by the better sharing of information and data. Having identified opportunities to improve the affordability of a major water mains upgrade program, the Water Company commissioned Atkins to further develop and scale the approach. This involved the creation of a geospatial data platform, which enabled the systematic identification of program synergies. Commercial agreements were negotiated, enabling multiple program outcomes to be delivered through the course of individual projects. A post investment appraisal concluded that the project resulted in significant efficiencies sufficient to recover a program at risk of overspend and a reduction of over 3,900 days of street works. This paper describes an efficient transferable approach that was employed to identify and share large datasets, promote engagement and validate benefit.
