IMPROVING TERTIARY SAND FILTER PERFORMANCE THROUGH MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONAL UPDATES

Improvement of granular media filter performance and reliability can be accomplished through field investigation, cleaning, and operational strategy to meet effluent permit requirements. Lessons learned will help users of tertiary filters in maintaining these critical but sometimes neglected and overlooked facilities of the treatment process. Accumulation of mud balls and debris within filters diminish the tertiary system effectiveness to remove solids. Filter cleaning and optimization can be implemented quickly, and without a large expense when periodic observations and inspections are regularly performed.
