This paper presents a startup method of high speed operation single-phase brushless dc motor based on virtual DQ model by applying variable all-pass filter. Generally, the rotor position information is required to control the BLDCM and can be obtained by using the position detection sensor. However, the position detection sensor is disadvantage such as expensiveness, additional installation space, sensitive temperature and noise etc. In order to overcome this disadvantage, the sensorless control algorithm that eliminate the position detection sensor have been studied continuously. The model-based sensorless control method can estimate the back-EMF from the voltage equation of the BLDCM and detect the rotor position by using the estimated back-EMF. However, the sensorless control based on back-EMF is difficult to detect the rotor position at a low speed and standstill because the back-EMF is proportional to the rotor speed. In this paper, a virtual DQ model startup algorithm based on I-f is proposed that it considers smooth transition operation with current controller for sensorless operation. The usefulness and effectiveness are verified through several experimental result.
