The method involves controlling the drive operation of a motor vehicle based on the current travel speed (C) and given target travel speed (D) of the vehicle using a control system provided with a computer (2). The control system operates based on the change in the transmission of an automatic machine gearbox, and determined virtual values derived from the physical deflection of the pedals. The change in transmission of the automatic machine gearbox affects the current travel speed and target travel speed of the vehicle. The determination of the virtual values is affected by the deviation of the current travel speed to the target travel speed due to the longitudinal vehicle acceleration (E) and torque (B) of the vehicle engine. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) Control apparatus used in the motor vehicle; and (B) Motor vehicle.
