With more vehicle use in metropolitan cities, transportation departments worldwide must manage on-street parking. Recently, various street parking vehicle detection technologies have emerged to maintain parking availability in high demand areas. We introduce three detection technologies involving the structure, the operating mechanism, and the application scenario. They are a wireless magnetic sensor, single parking space-based video cameras, and multi-parking space-based video cameras. We propose a model to evaluate the application of technologies. In this model, we proposed eight criteria and an improved AHP method by optimizing computing objective matrix. We conducted an experiment to verify the model with a dataset from actual application in Beijing. The analytic result showed the model was robust and universal for evaluating application of street parking detection technologies. We also analyzed advantages and disadvantages of each technology. In conclusion, we summarized the evaluating model and proposed supporting policies and future ideal detection technologies.
