The initialization of VIBE algorithm leads to the problem of ghosts. Due to the update strategy of the original VIBE algorithm, the static object will be misjudged as the moving object for a long time. This paper presents an improved VIBE algorithm to suppress ghosts and static objects faster and more completely. First, using the original VIBE algorithm to detect the moving object, the static foreground in a specific region of a continuous multi frames is detected. Next, according to the variance of the static foreground of the current frame, ghosts and static objects are distinguished. Then the background pixels are replaced by using update strategy. The update strategy of the original VIBE is a random replacement for elements in sample set. While in this paper, we only replace elements that are judged as background pixels. This method is more objected, and can speed up the update process of background models. The experimental results show that the improved algorithm can suppress ghosts faster and more completely, and solve the problem of static objects to a certain extent.
