This paper presents an inter-turn fault (ITF) diagnosis method for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) based on variational mode decomposition (VMD). In this paper, VMD decomposes zero sequence voltage component (ZSVC) into a set of intrinsic mode function (IMF) components, and the inter-turn fault is diagnosed by observing the variations of the related IMFs containing the fault characteristics. Simulation is carried out to validate the proposed approach. The simulation results show that the proposed method is an effective diagnostic technique, which can be effectively applied for the ITF diagnosis in the PMSM.
