In this paper, a novel design method for tuning the optimal PID controller parameters for unwinding tension system of web press using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is presented. First of all, The three kinds of control system indices ISE, IAE and ITAE are used for optimization. According to PSO principle and tension system mathematical model, PSO-incomplete differential PID control system and PSO-anti-windup incomplete differential PID control system are established respectively, these system improve the control performance of tension. A new objective function is proposed for the tension control requirement of the web press, and the simulation results show that the tension controller based on the evaluation function by PSO can suppress the overshoot, undershoot of tension effectively and improve the printing quality. The method of tuning PID parameter based on PSO is a convenient and effective parameter optimization method for tension control.
