In this paper we will be discussing an overview of utilizing Vertical Axis Wind Turbines in local communities of developing countries, testing the local acceptance by employing a factorial survey in Indonesia and Thailand, promoting a conceptual design that will suit these locations respectfully and providing an open source database to help the local community utilize and generate electricity independently which could relief developing countries governments from the hefty costs of producing, transporting and distributing electrical energy to these communities.Before planning, designing and situating any renewable energy project in a developing area we have to take in consideration the local social opinion and fairness into account. As in many developed countries, including the local population in decision making advances the project acceptance, stimulates socio-economic dynamics of the local community and promotes the adoption of new technologies. Thus the intention to connect society with engineering and new renewable technologies. Relying on the survey results a 2 D simulation model has been developed to study the performance of a conceptual Vertical Axis Wind Turbine.We structured the case to first discuss some issues that have shaped our understanding of social acceptance with case studies in both Thailand and Indonesia, followed by a simulation of a proposed vertical axis wind turbine and finally a web based platform to with open source data needed for local residents, communities and societies to have access and implement their projects. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of this project for future development, social acceptance enhancements and practical applications.
