Due to there being significant differences in emission and fuel consumption tests and actual applications for hybrid conventional fuel and power-driving power train characteristics of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), there are various emission and energy consumption standards for PHEVs in various countries or regions. Analysis of differences between emission and energy consumption test requirements for American, European and Chinese PHEV standards was carried out and effects of various conditions (driving cycle and ambient temperature) on their emission and energy consumption performances were further analyzed. Results indicate that emission and energy consumption was affected by the driving cycle in its complexity and mileage and the low or high environment may deteriorate the vehicle emission and fuel consumption performances to some extent; moreover, fuel consumption may rise due to air conditioning load or low-power. For more comprehensive evaluation of emission and energy consumption performances of PHEVs, the high temperature and air conditioning tests as well as petrol-electric conversion method are necessarily complemented to the national standards.
