Two-stage anaerobic bio-filter reactor was continuously fed with food waste for the simultaneous production of hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) gases. The temperature of the reactor was kept constant at 35. To eliminate methanogenic activity and obtain substantial hydrogen production in the hydrogen reactor, seed sludge was heated for one hour at 100. The impact of pH and hydraulic retention times on H2 and CH4 productions have been studied for a period of 95 days. The maximum hydrogen production in the first reactor was obtained at pH 5.5 and HRT 17h. Increased H2 production in the first reactor lead to increase CH4 production in the second reactor. The three dominant bacteria strains in the hydrogen reactor had been confirmed including Burkholderia vietnamiensis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Stenotrophomonas rhizophila.
