A number of joint direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms have been proposed over the last few decades for target position estimation. However, the pairing process between the DODs and DOAs estimation results in high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose an improved unitary estimation method of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (U-ESPRIT) algorithm for joint DOD and DOA estimation without a pairing operation. Therefore the algorithm is able to avoid a pairing process and reduce calculation cost. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively enhance the accuracy of identifying and locating targets for bistatic multiple-input multiple-output radar system.
