Developing Standards in ASTM International Committee E37 on Thermal Properties

The American Society for Testing and Materials was formed almost 120 years ago in response to problems with the failure of steel used in the railroad industry. This was the basis for the formation of the first ASTM committee, what is now Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys. Since that time the American Society of Testing and Materials has transformed into ASTM International and expanded to include 145 additional committees from concrete pipe to resilient floor coverings, from petroleum products to occupational health and safety and many others. ASTM International is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of voluntary consensus standards and today, over 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance health and safety, strengthen market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. Our leadership in international standards development is driven by the contributions of our members: more than 30,000 technical experts and business professionals representing over 140 countries. In addition to a standards developer, ASTM International has established itself as a leader laboratory proficiency testing programs and training courses related to its standards ASTM Committee E37 on Thermal Measurements was formed in 1973 and since that time has grown to over 110 members and 69 standards ranging from the committee's first standard on testing for linear thermal expansion of solid materials with a push-rod dilatometer to a new test method for the shear thinning index on non-Newtonian liquids using a concentric cylinder rotational viscometer. The committee has expended to include seven technical subcommittees that include calorimetry & mass loss, reference materials, nomenclature, thermophysical properties, rheology, microcalorimetry, fundamental, statistical and mechanical properties. ASTM International's open consensus process uses advanced Internet-based standards development tools and ensures worldwide access for all interested individuals. It is important to note that any user of an ASTM standard can provide input into the continuous development of that standard. It is also significant to note that ASTM committee members can participate extensively in the standards development process even if unable to attend meetings.
