Conclusions: We have synthesized visible light mediated thiol-norbornene hydrogels using multi-arm PEGNB and di-cysteine peptides. We found mat thiol-norbornene hydrogels crosslinked in the presence of soluble tyrosine exhibited faster gelation kinetics and higher crosslinking efficiency. In addition, hydrogels crosslinked in the presence of tyrosine preserved the viability and function of pancreatic β-cells and mouse islets. Tyrosine-assisted visible light mediated thiol-norbornene polymerization should be of great value for fabricating PEG-peptide gels in tissue engineering applications.
