A two-dimensional (2D) capillary-well (CW) motif is a novel structure featuring thousands of cylindrical glass capillaries in diameter 100 and 600 nm and integrated through low-resolution photolithography (~2 μm) and standard silicon processing techniques. Owing to high entropic energy barriers imposed at capillary openings, this design offers a rapid high-performance sieving of biomolecules under intense electric fields as demonstrated here for continuous-flow DNA or protein electrophoresis.
