Impacts of Guidance function on Air Traffic Controller situation awareness

The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR~1) project for Advanced Surface Movement, Guidance and Control Systems (A-SMGCS), focusing on Guidance Function, studies different solutions of guidance systems at airports such as Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL), Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC) between Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) and Flight Crew (FC), Data Link Communication between ATCOs and vehicle drivers at Airport and Combined Vision System (CVS) for pilots. The CPDLC function for Air Traffic Controller Officers and Flight Crew or D-TAXI and the AGL are concept that aims to reduce the voice communication and increase safety at airports. To prove and evaluate the concepts, different guidance function was integrated in an advanced controller working position (A-CWP) in experiments that took place at Airbus in Toulouse (France) with the participation of ATCOs and Apron managers from Germany, Italy and France. Test pilots from Airbus and active FC also contributed to the trials. A live trial took place at Riga (Latvia) in January 2016 with local controllers. In this paper we remind the concepts, we detail the experiments and the live trial results, we analyze the impact on ATCOs situation awareness, and we provide some recommendations for future implementation.
