A novel configuration for reducing end-effect detent force for a high thrust transverse flux linear synchronous motor is presented. The method is based on principle of destructive superposition of harmonic orders in detent force waveform. It is achieved by splitting a linear motor, with a high slot-pole combination into three separate sections, allowing enhanced degree of freedom to mitigate end-effect harmonics without giving up the low slot-effect force feature of a high slot-pole structure. This splitting consequently increases available stroke length. Analytical and numerical analyses are conducted to verify the proposed approach.
