This paper summarizes the importance of mass and heat transport in the development of commercially valuable gas production techniques. It also discusses the acquisition and analysis of data in a field gas production trial. During the 2013 gas production attempt in the eastern Nankai Trough, temperature data were obtained with downhole sensors, and the thermal information were analyzed by forward and inverse processes. The analysis results provide insight into the heat and fluid motions in the geological formation and some of the reservoir characteristics.
