Preliminary performance evaluation of a novel 12/8 segmental rotor type SRM

In this paper, a novel 12/8 segmental rotor type switched reluctance motor (SRM) is proposed for vehicle cooling fan application. Unlike conventional structures, the stator of the proposed structure is constructed with two special stator poles in which the exciting and auxiliary poles are designed exclusively. The rotor is constructed from a series of discrete segments, each of which is embedded in the nonmagnetic isolator. And the windings are only wound on the exciting stator poles. These configurations lead to short flux paths and no flux reversal in the stator of the proposed SRM. Hence, compared with conventional SRMs, the proposed structure may increase the electric utilization and reduce magneto-motive force (MMF) requirement. To verify the proposed structure, the prototype of the proposed SRM is designed and manufactured. The performance of the proposed motor is evaluated and compared with a conventional 12/8 SRM. Finally, both the static and dynamic performances of the two motors are presented and compared.
