Wake Vortex Collection at the Dubai International Airport and Sample Results

The Dubai Air Navigation Services (DANS) has an on-going field experiment at the Dubai International Airport (DXB) to measure the evolution of wake vortices generated by aircraft in the In Ground Effect, Near Ground Effect, and Out of Ground Effect regions. The data are collected using three Lockheed Martin Coherent Technologies (LMCT) WTX WindTracer® pulsed Doppler lidars. The data collection started in August, 2013, and the data collection is still ongoing. These data are being used to determine, for a large number of aircraft, vortex circulation decay and vortex position under a variety of atmospheric conditions. The ultimate goal is to safely reduce aircraft separations and to safely increase the capacity of the Dubai International Airport. This paper will outline the strategy behind the lidar placement and the data that are being collected, and will provide a first look at results from the data collection.
