Clogging of Drainage Devices in Railway Infrastructure: Site Instrumentation and Water Systems

In France, up to 450 km of high speed lines (HSL) are potentially subject to drain scaling. A HSL site affected scaling caused by calcite precipitation was continuously monitored during a 15-month period in order to determine the key factors of precipitation and its short term and seasonal dynamics. Water samples were also monthly analyzed. Since the drain system is a multi-environments system, and concerned on multi-phase reactions, the study is divided into two parts: a physical one (transport of water in the system) and chemical one (transport of the reactants in the system). The physical processes have an essential impact on the precipitation process. In the present paper, on the basis of the data collected, the physical behavior of the experimental site (water transport path) will be presented, first step for further chemical process study.
