Silicones are the Innovative Solution for Architectural Coatings

Silicones are used to solve technical innovative coating solutions for countless types of architectural coatings for exterior/interior wall applications and wood stains. In 1963, Wacker patented a new technology; an aqueous dispersion of organopolysiloxane resin used in paints to provide excellent UV and water protection of the substrate(s) the coatings are applied to. Development of innovative polysiloxane and silane emulsions soon followed. Novel silicone emulsions opened doors to new opportunities in water based products to provide essential roles in coatings over the past 50 years. Countless buildings, decks and walls have been coated using silicone technology; thus providing a clean, water protected and high quality appearance. Years of true outdoor exposure, precise testing and effective commercial solutions for coatings have resulted in silicones as an appealing technology. Discussed in this paper is how the silicone emulsion technology provides the long term hydrophobicity with visual water beading, increased film durability, flow and leveling, easy to clean applications, decreased dirt pick up and UV stability.
