High penetration of photovoltaic (PV) generation imposes new challenges to energy management strategies in distribution energy systems. The stochastic nature of PV power has to be considered in dispatch models that address load and generation power balance. Responsive demand is considered as an important resource to this end. This research proposes a new scenario-based stochastic formulation for the economic dispatch with high penetration of PV power. Conventional generation and responsive demand are scheduled in order to maintain the energy balance and minimize generation costs. A scenario generation procedure that models the variability of PV power is implemented. Furthermore, a scenario reduction technique is used in order to attain computational efficiency. The results obtained are based on the 192-bus Brazilian distribution system. They demonstrate the potential benefits of the proposed model that propitiates system flexibility, enhancing resource availability in order to attain power balance.
