This paper presents a model for external vibration and shock impact effects on vibratory micromechanical ring gyroscopes. The multi-mode dynamical model for ring gyroscopes is derived using classical variational principle and Bubnov-Galerkin procedure. Inspection of this model demonstrates that the output of a ring gyroscope is fundamentally insensitive to vibration due to the decoupled dynamics governing ring translation versus ring flexure, however, becomes vibration-sensitive in the presence of nonlinearity and asymmetric stiffness or damping of the ring structure.
