A Value Operations Methodology (VOM) Approach to Multi-Criteria Assessment of Similar-Class Air Vehicles An Airbus A350 Versus the Boeing 787 Case Study

The research presented in this paper builds on the Value Operations Methodology (VOM) theory to create a model that enables objective, value-oriented comparison of competing products. This model is established by assembling a set of criteria and collecting the input of experts regarding their relative importance. Consensus indicators are introduced to the VOM framework along with a common benchmark against which the products are scored. The VOM approach is then applied to the case of the Airbus A350-900 versus the Boeing 787-9 in an aerospace case study. Results of a survey among experts from various (related) professional fields are used as inputs in the VOM to assist the case study. In addition, several performance parameters of the two aircraft are estimated. The findings suggest that the B787 prevails in terms of cost, whereas the A350 has an advantage in passenger satisfaction; the final outcome across all (five) categories of comparison being a tie. This result was found to be robust after being subjected to sensitivity analysis but the main contribution of the work is in presenting VOM as a suitable transdisciplinary method of assessing and collating multi-criteria key performance indicators.
