The present contribution is conceived as a review describing progress in addressing the assessment of marine phytoplankton community composition by the use of hyperspectral in situ measurements of remote-sensing reflectance, R_(rs)(λ). It is intended to provide: (1) a summary of relevant concepts related to in situ R_(rs)(λ) data, (2) examples of opportunities and new methodologies for a better assessment of phytoplankton biodiversity, and (3) ideas for optimizing those promising approaches.
