Betacyanins from Portulaca oleracea markedly reversed the D-galinduced learning and memory impairment by behavioral tests. The activities of SOD, CAT, GPx and GR in D-galactose-treated mice were enhanced. Significant negative correlations were found between the latency to find the platform of mice and the activities of SOD, CAT GR and GPx in mice brain. These results suggest the neuroprotective effect of betacyanins against D-gal induced neurotoxicity might be caused, at least in part, by the increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes.
