The protective effect of oxyresveratrol from Ramulus mori against alloxan induced liver damage in mice was examined. In this study, the activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase, serum alanine aminotransferase and superoxide dismutase, catalase and the contents of malonyldialdehyde and reduced glutathione in liver were measured. Mice were divided into five groups as control, model control (only treated with alloxan), alloxan +25mg/kg oxyresveratrol, alloxan +50mg/kg oxyresveratrol and alloxan +30mg/kg silymarin. The results revealed that alloxan could induce the liver damage through the elevation of transaminases activities and malondialdehyde accompanied by significant reductions in reduced glutathione level and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. The treatment with oxyresveratrol can bring those changes to near normal level. The protective effect of oxyresveratrol was further supported by the histopathological observation and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
