Driving Experience on the Effectiveness of Advanced Driving Assistant Systems

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effect of driving experience on the effectiveness of Advanced Driving Assistant Systems (ADAS). In this research, Field Operational Tests (FOTs) was designed, and thirty-two participants were recruited to drive an instrumented vehicle on the test route in and around Wuhan. Vehicle dynamic information, environmental information, and driving operational data were recorded by data synchronization technology. The test results showed that ADAS had a positive impact on skilled drivers and unskilled drivers, especially for unskilled drivers, in the following vehicle scenario. In the other hand, in the braking scenario, ADAS had a positive impact on unskilled drivers but a negative impact on skilled drivers. The obtained results are helpful for future development of ADAS for avoiding unexpected negative effects.
