Advanced Pavement Technology Used for Rehabilitation of Runways at Edmonton International Airport

This paper briefly describes the investigation, design process, and application of advanced pavement technologies used for the rehabilitation of composite pavements on two runways at Edmonton International Airport (YEG). It was identified that the main issues included very severe stripping of the existing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), poor quality longitudinal joints, poor load transfer across joints and cracks in a number of the underlying concrete slabs. A multi-year rehabilitation strategy was developed by YEG in cooperation with the design consultants. In addition to detailed pavement design, customized specifications were developed to address the observed pavement issues through the implementation of advanced pavement technologies. New HMA mixes were designed for surface and base courses to meet the requirements of the new, customized specifications. The asphalt was paved in echelon using three pavers and two ShuttleBuggy~? Material Transfer Vehicles (MTVs) to eliminate cold joints and any potential for segregation. Slabs with poor load transfer were removed and replaced. A film of polymer modified asphalt tack coat was applied on the underlying concrete surface to improve the bond with the asphalt layers. The overlying new asphalt was sawcut. The rehabilitation was completed on time and budget and the quality of the new pavement surface is excellent.
