Due to the environmental, economic, and security benefits, the concept of microgrid is gaining popularity. Micro-grids can operate in two modes: grid-connected and islanded, and their system level objectives in these two modes are different. In this paper, we investigate the energy management of a CHP-based microgrid with both electrical and thermal loads in the grid-connected mode. To address the variability associated with renewable generation in the microgrid, we propose a two-stage adaptive robust optimization approach with the objective of providing a robust unit commitment schedule for combined heat and power (CHP) units and power exchange schedule with the utility grid in the day-ahead market that minimizes the total operating cost under the worst-case renewable generation output scenario. In our approach, the microgrid will be more reliable due to the consideration of the worst-case scenario, and the over-conservatism can also be avoided in our approach by introducing some parameters called the "budget of uncertainty".
