This paper will present methods to properly perform, interpret and manage your required field and laboratory test results for coal refuse embankment materials. Further, the significance and determination of sand-like versus clay-like behavior for fine refuse materials will be discussed from a laboratory testing standpoint, as well as a practical example of field application based on material plasticity. Case histories will be presented to illustrate the methods and techniques.
