TOWARDS SELF-SUSTAINING 511 SYSTEMS

511 Traveler Information Systems in the United States are government agency owned and operated free services. The goal is to provide the public with information to support trip decision-making both before and during the trip at no direct cost to the traveler. These systems, which are operational in 46 states, are coming under increasing financial pressure. This paper examines efforts by 511 agencies to address the problem of rising deployment and operational costs. It identifies and analyzes successful and unsuccessful initiatives. The paper concludes with specific recommendations to such agencies to avoid the pitfalls of the past and attain the goal of self-supporting 511 systems in the near future.
