Eco-routing with consideration of vehicle fuel consumption and emissions is a newly-proposed approach to enhance the travel efficiency and provide the environment-friendly routes. It has shown enough advances to the traditional routing and become a promising research direction at present. Based on the summary of previous eco-routing approaches, a methodology for eco-routing study is proposed in the paper concerning the specifications of Chinese cities. A systematic and complete research framework which includes vehicle fuel consumption/emissions influence factor analyzing, traffic state information acquiring and predicting, eco-route algorithm designing and experimental verification is introduced. It is fully resulted from the comparison and analysis of previous vehicle fuel consumption/emission models, traffic data collection methods and eco-routing approaches. The proposed framework is then extended for Chinese community to develop vehicle fuel consumption/emissions models, traffic prediction models, driver-oriented and operator-oriented eco-routing strategy and verification systems in eco-routing research. The implementation procedure of possible 6 steps for the proposed framework in China is discussed to reduce vehicle fuel consumption/emissions.
