An assessment of the stray current durability of wire mesh reinforcements near railway lines and the principles of the phenomenon are described in order to eventually determine the suitability of polymer coated wire mesh reinforcements in railway works. The paper covers the possible effect on the steel reinforcements of stray currents in the ground which can stem from the railway traction power systems, analyzing the different behaviors with respect to the adopted electrification system (AC/DC). The paper describes some executed reinforced soil structures for railways, where the polymer coated wire mesh reinforcements have been used to provide the embankment with the required stability: the Metro 3 in Copenhagen, Denmark and the doubling of the railway track between San Gavino and Decimomannu in Sardinia, Italy.
