Theoretical investigation of whispering gallery mode, WGM, resonator excitation by temporally switched source is carried out. Study is performed in rigorous mathematical manner using Green's function approach. Analytical solution obtained in Laplace transform domain is inverted with simple numerical technique to yield a time domain representation. Attention is focused upon the spectrum of cavity resonances excited, in particular how the practically important WGMs are established over time, and the transient radiation fields.
