Simulation means supporting NOSYCA Project

The NOSYCA project is the new CNES program dedicated to balloon operations. Composed of a space segment (balloon and its gondolas) and a ground segment (control center, network and stations), the system has a vocation to support the campaign preparation, flight piloting, separation management, elements recovery after flight and maintenance after operations. The system has been qualified in September 2013 for one balloon (BSO) family, after the operational qualification campaign held in Timmins, Canada. To lead to this success, the project team relies, for the first time in CNES balloon system development history, on simulation means to validate this complex system and to provide a training tool to operators. Based on a simulation infrastructure developed by CNES (BASILES) involved in several spatial projects, two simulators have been developed to answer specific needs and reach different objectives. Built around the same simulation infrastructure, sharing models, those simulators participate in a complementary way into the technical and operational qualification of the system. Besides this experience constitutes a first step into the development of balloon series, and shall open new prospects for simulation activities.
