The Difference and Similarity Comparisons of Traffic Accident Characteristics in China and Europe

Considering considerable differences in crash attributes in Europe and China, this study concentrates on a comprehensive analysis to compare the annual crash distribution, monthly crash distribution, the amount of passenger cars, and the fatality rate by different transport modes in Europe and China. The research findings illustrates that the total number of traffic crashes in China shows a decreasing trend, and the index of fatalities per one thousand population is lower than these in Europe. Considering the factor of motorization, the traffic safety situation in China is still challenging. Due to insufficient experience in dealing with snow and frost weather conditions in China, the fatality rate from October to December is relatively high. The motorcycle accidents account for a large proportion, e.g. 19% and 13% respectively, in Europe and China. The bicycle and pedestrian fatalities account for a small proportion, 3%, in China while in Europe, the proportion is 25%.
