The method involves concluding the existence of an accident when an accident criterion is derived and determined from characteristic properties and parameters of temporal-spatial traffic patterns (2) that are caused by sudden infrastructure change due to the accident. The existence of the accident criterion is determined when a temporal-spatial extension of moving-breadth-traffic jam exceeds a predetermined threshold value.
