Advances in Strengthening Existing Prestressed Concrete Cable-stayed Bridges

More and more engineers have been attracted by the technology for strengthening existing prestressed concrete, cable-stayed bridges. The status and new development of this technology are comprehensively summarized together with the practical experience and achievements of strengthening engineering in recent years in China. Characteristics and realization ways of many strengthening techniques are described and future trends for use of these techniques identified. Engineering application and practice has shown Stay Cable Replacement is a key technique to prolong the service life of an existing prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge, and External Bonding and Enlarging Cross-section are often adopted in the strengthening projects. Recently developed techniques are Replacement of Closure Segment and Replacement of Tension Rocker Bearing Cables at Subsidiary Piers. Advances in strengthening technology for existing prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridges have important and far-reaching significance in promoting the service level of existing long-span bridges and ensuring their safe and sustainable operation.
