For the purpose of systematic exchanges of project information, the project numbering system (PNS) of construction projects prescribes standard 'tables' and 'methods' in order to number all different types of construction documents including geometry and non-geometry data.A well-defined PNS not only effectively optimizes managerial workloads for on-going projects, but also significantly improves the reusability of historical database for future projects.However, current PNS components mostly focus on a specific business function (e.g.work breakdown structure (WBS) for scheduling, or cost breakdown structure (CBS) for cost control) without having enough integration capability with other functions.This integration method is also desirable for 3D-CAD objects for automated BIM implementation.In this context, this paper introduces a novel concept of eXtensible Breakdown Structure (XBS) for automated integration of construction information.Two basic components of a PNS including the industry standard classification (ISC) and project numbering systems (PNS) were defined first.Proposed PNS using XBS concepts was then developed and applied to real-world housing projects in order to validate the methodology.Variables and implications for the proposed XBS are discussed throughout this paper.
