Simultaneous Determination of Five Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) in Soil and Air

This present paper describes the development of a gas chromatogra-phy(GC) coupled with a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) for simultaneous determination of five Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) chemicals in soil and air. Five PAEs chemicals were purchased from J&K Chemicals Ltd, Shanghai, China. From a variety of solvents tested, ethyl acetate was found to be the best solvent for simultaneously extracting five chemicals from soil and air samples. GC (Agilent 6890) analysis of the extracts was performed on an analytical column (HP-5 capillary column, 30 m and 0.25 × 250 μm). The results showed that there was a good linearity over the range 0.625-40.0 μg/mL (r > 0.99). The recoveries were more than 85.0 % in soil and air samples, and the intra- and inter-day coefficients of variation were less than 15.0 % in all cases. The lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.625 μg/mL. The GC-FID method was readily applied to simultaneously quantitate five PAEs chemicals in soil and air extract samples.
