This paper serves as an introduction to practitioners on shared use vehicles and severalstrategies to implement and integrate shared use vehicles into an existing transit ortransportation network. The shared use vehicles identified are ride sharing, car sharing andbike sharing. These shared use vehicles are continually expanding and innovating. The paperincludes a review of research on transit integration. Lessons from other transit integrationstudies demonstrate the challenges of integration and the benefit. The integration methodssuggested is through street infrastructure, the fare card and information technology. Challengesof each integration method are reviewed and several case studies are explored in the UnitedStates and globally. A policy implementation chart is included to guide practitioners inmunicipal government to implement an integrated transportation system that includes shareduse vehicles. Policy suggestions include advocacy, coalition building, and infrastructureimprovements. Short term and long term suggestions are included as well as challenges. Thisintegrated approach being studied by researchers should begin to be implemented by policymakers and those in field. It is only through implementation and experimentation thatresearchers and practitioners know what will ultimately be successful. An integrated approachof shared use vehicles, transit, freight and land use is the process to which we fill the world’sempty seats and create a more sustainable and long lasting transportation system.
