Comparison of Nitrogen Compounds in Shale Oil and Coal Tar by Gas Chromatograpby-Mass Spectrometry and Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry A compositional analysis and comparison of the nitrogen compounds present in Longkou shale oil (LSO) and Shenmu low temperature coal tar (SCT) were performed using FT-ICR MS and GC-MS. The following conclusions were drawn: 1. The weight-average molecular weights of LSO and SCT are lower than 650. 2. In LSO, N_1, N_2, N_1O_1, N_1O_2, N_2O_1, N_1S_1 and S_1 class compounds were determined with N_1 and J_1O_1 class compounds as the most abundant. SCT contained N_1, N_2, N_1O_1, N_1O_2 and N_2O_1 class compounds, while N_1 and N_1O_1 class compounds dominated. 3.The ranges of both DBE values and carbon numbers of nitrogen compounds of LSO are wider than those of SCT. 4. Pyridines, amines, indoles, quinolines, carbazoles and acridines were identified in the two oils, which is consistent with the observation that N1 compounds with DBE of 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10 were found in the two oils. 5. Aliphatic nitriles ranging from C_9 to C_(16) were also identified in the neutral fractions of LSO, whereas, nitriles were not found in SCT. 6. There are 61 kinds of nitrogen compounds detected in LSO, while 55 kinds of nitrogen compounds are identified in SCT .
