Novel Injectable Newberyite Based Non-exothermic Orthopedic Cements with High Early Strength

As alternatives to calcium phosphate cements, magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) have been gaining significant attention in orthopedics. The main theme of our effort is to develop self-setting non-exothermic predominantly newberyite (MgHPO_43H_2O)-based MPCs for possible applications in orthopedics and dentistry. There are two broad ranges of MPC compositions, wherein the predominant phase is either struvite or newberyite, with the latter possessing optimum biodegradability. However, controlling exothermic self-setting reactions in MPCs has become an important research issue. We reported that a simple microwave treatment to acid-based reacted predominantly newberyite based MPC composition stops almost completed setting reactions preserved in a precursor phase. [1]. The setting reaction can be started a second time by adding an aqueous setting medium, without any exothermicty. The aim of this work is to report data for this new class of predominantly newberyite based non-exothermic MPC compositions.
