Conclusions: From the results to date, the chitosan-PEG hydrogels rapidly react via Michael addition to form in situ hydrogels compatible with fibroblasts in vitro and spinal cord tissue in vivo. The gels have appropriate chemical and physical properties to avoid eliciting a detrimental host response; due to this and the gel meeting our criteria, the hydrogel system appears appropriate to treatment strategies to address molecular mechanisms tied to syrinx development. Future studies will investigate drug release properties of the gel in vitro and in vivo.
